In-service pipe deflection
Pull an initially straight steel pipe at the centre of a symmetric excavation while it remains pressurized. Both buried ends are ideal clamps; the excavated span is free of soil contact.
Compare uncertain initial states, calculate a prescribed movement, or explore lengths, displacements and support counts. Construction pressure and temperature stay constant; permanent assessment adds separate future operating cases. Optional frictionless supports allow lift-off and horizontal sliding. Horizontal-only pulling leaves vertical motion governed by weight and support contact.
Separate temporary and permanent sequences. For permanent maintained deviation, select the dedicated elastic assessment below. HDPE and plastic steel are excluded. Temporary return assumes a reversible elastic path and restoration of support.
Pipe & steel
Uniform analysis thickness; local corrosion and defects are not assessed.
Steel only. Enter properties applicable at the operating temperature; no automatic material derating.
Intervention type
Operating conditions & weight
Constant pressure and temperature during the intervention. Zero external gauge pressure. Coating contributes weight only.
Anti-corrosion Coating
Excavation & movement
Total: 20 m
Targets are measured from the original straight axis. An unconstrained component remains free. The return path retraces the movement, then restores support.
Temporary supports
Fixed, rigid, frictionless supports at the original pipe level. Vertical upward reaction only; lift-off, axial and horizontal sliding are free. Supports are installed before local soil release. No lateral stability restraint or support-capacity check.
Custom criterion
50.00% · factor 2.000 · allowable 179.50 MPa
Conservative Von Mises beam bound, including transverse shear. Default threshold: 50% of yield (safety factor 2), editable for your assessment.
Initial-state scenarios
Extra axial force: tension positive, compression negative. Excludes the pressure and thermal contributions already modeled. Zero is an explicit assumption.
CSA Z662:2023 — targeted checks
Partial checks only; lifting is not assessed under CSA. No overall CSA compliance verdict. Custom criteria alone govern searches.
Review the custom threshold and assumptions, then calculate.

One intervention, several initial-state hypotheses
Results will show the excavated state, support reactions, the target profiles, actuator forces, end reactions and the governing stress bound across the path. No scenario is treated as known merely because its extra force is zero.
Reference frameworks
Active: user-defined elastic criterion.
Optional CSA Z662:2023 checks cover minimum nominal wall and the anchored pressure/temperature design state only. Lifting, bending/stability and Annex C remain unassessed. ASME B31.4/B31.8 and European requirements for Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland are planned extensions. No normative compliance verdict is available.
Presets
Save all In-service inputs on this device: pipe, steel, fluid, coating, operating conditions, movement, supports, custom criterion, initial-state scenarios and optional CSA design inputs. Use Manage to rename, duplicate, delete or export/import presets. Loading a preset clears previous results; calculate again after reviewing the inputs.
